ERNST AND FALK : DIALOGUES FOR FREEMASONS 1–5 (aka Conversations for Freemasons)(the only) Complete Edition by Gotthold Ephraim Lessing (1778)A gently modernized complete re-edition, 2026.Supplemented with information on the author, his life, and his work.CARPEDIEM GUTE BÜCHER! @crpdm.deDigitaler Buchhüter on amazonThe two fictional friends Ernst and Falk are staying at Bad Pyrmont to take the waters. In a conversational setting modelled on Plato, Ernst wants to learn more from Falk about Freemasonry — but Falk answers on a kind of “meta-level,” because he does not wish to describe actual, i.e. lodge-organized Freemasonry, but rather the real principles of an ideal Freemasonry.Lessing himself published Dialogues 1 to 3 anonymously in 1778. This explains both their well-crafted form and their internal coherence. The further Dialogues 4 and 5 were probably published around 1780 without Lessing's further knowledge. Lessing (born January 22, 1729, in Kamenz, Margraviate of Upper Lusatia; died February 15, 1781, in Brunswick) was an important poet of the Enlightenment. Lessing is the first German dramatist whose work has continued to be performed in the theaters uninterruptedly to this day. Read more
