In a conversational setting modelled on Plato, Ernst wants to learn more from Falk about Freemasonry — but Falk answers on a kind of “meta-level,” because he does not wish to describe actual, i.e. lodge-organized Freemasonry, but rather the real principles of an ideal Freemasonry.Lessing himself published Dialogues 1 to 3 anonymously in 1778. This explains both their well-crafted form and their internal coherence. The further Dialogues 4 and 5 were probably published around 1780 without Lessing's further knowledge. In the original, therefore, these are more in the nature of textual fragments and ideas for the dialogues.G. E.
